2km open water swim, followed by a 90km bike ride through the local mountains (including the Col du Cengle at 1,650ft) and a half marathon.

“A couple of months ago I suffered a brief detachment from reality. Health experts believe it was brought on by a combination of things – impending(?) middle age and a touch of machismo being the main contributing factors. I found myself signed up for the “Pays d’Aix IRONMAN 70.3”. There is a cut off time of 8h 30mins. My aim is to finish it in 8h 29 mins – if possible. Training has been tough to say the least. Humiliating is another word, as this challenge requires me to wear not just lycra, but also neoprene.”
